If one is to understand the difference between Dr. Strangelove and Fight Club, he is best to begin with the difference between apples and pears.
Pears are green and sometimes red, just like apples. The difference lies in their forms, only. In this case, the colour has nothing to do with the sense of the ‘thing’. This is not so in the case of a ceramic glass cook top. Even a child is well advised not to touch it when it is red instead of brown or grey. From a structuralist point of view, scenes and sequences are the basic elements of each screenplay. Scenes have two determinant components, time and place. Sequences interconnect the scenes by using an idea like wedding, party, or murder. But every scene, every sequence, and even every act and screenplay have their own structure of, let us say, three or five acts. Language is the main means to codify human reality. It dominates in law, in reports, and even in the weather forecast on television. Images very often serve the only purpose of illustration, although films prove that they indeed are capable of communicating conceptual meanings.
